Shane Delia to open Middle Eastern wine bar in Windsor

Shane Delia

Shane Delia, the celebrity chef behind Melbourne's Maha and kebab joint and food truck Biggie Smalls, has plans to open a new wine bar with a Middle Eastern slant.

Moving into the old Biggie Smalls site on Chapel Street in Windsor (the Collingwood Biggie Smalls branch remains) will be a 40-seat wine bar celebrating wines from less-known regions in Turkey, Israel, Lebanon and the surrounds.

Maha East will be a casual offshoot of the 10-year-old CBD restaurant, which he renovated and revamped in 2017.

Food, by former Maha sous chef Simon Lillico, will be shareable and fun, like Moraccon-spiced fries with housemade za’atar and kefalograviera cheese; hummus with “Persian-style” XO sauce (made with middle-Eastern fermented fish paste, saffron and turmeric); and savoury doughnuts filled with taramasalata.

Some Maha favourites will piggyback across, including the slow-roasted lamb shoulder with pomegranate and smoked almonds, and the Turkish-delight doughnuts – upsized to bigger portions.

Maha East is slated to open June 27.
