David Chang, Marco Pierre White to headline this year’s Gourmet Escape

Momofuku founder David Chang is heading to Margaret River.

Western Australia’s Gourmet Escape food festival always draws big names, from Heston Blumenthal and Rick Stein to Nigella Lawson. And this year’s line-up, which has just been announced, is no exception.

Fronting the seventh annual 10-day event are Momofuku founder David Chang, celebrity chef Marco Pierre White, and White’s mentor Pierre Koffmann from London three Michelin star restaurant La Tante Claire.

Previously held in Margaret River, this year’s Gourmet Escape will bring over 50 events to three regions, beginning in the Swan Valley before moving to Perth and finishing in Margaret River.

The celebrated chefs will speak and cook alongside local chefs and winemakers in a diverse program, running from November 8 to 17.

Pierre White will open the festival in WA’s oldest wine region at Sandalford Winery. He and Sittella head chef Mike Price will prepare a marquee dinner before Pierre White sits down for a conversation about sustainable eating and the food of tomorrow.

The Swan Valley will also host the inaugural World Gourmet Symposium for the foodservice industry. Hosted by Chang, speakers will discuss the future of the food tourism and hospitality industries. Chang will also cook some of his signature Korean- and Japanese-influenced food from his global Momofuku empire to the Gourmet Beach BBQ – three days of lavish dining at the water’s edge. Chang will cook on Friday 15th, while the Beach BBQ on Saturday the 16th will showcase food from some of WA’s best chefs including Kenny McHardy (Manuka Woodfire Kitchen), Scott Bridger (Bib & Tucker) and Brenton Pyke (Market Eating House). On Sunday, Icebergs’ exec Monty Koludrovic will take over the open-air kitchen.

Out to sea on the same weekend, Mark Best will take over a luxury 26-metre twin-catamaran, cooking lunch alongside some of Margaret Wines best wines. The chef, who ran Marque in Surry Hills for 17 years, and recently starred on on Netflix cooking show, Final Table, is known for his impeccably presented, refined fare championing local produce.

Other star chefs in the line-up include David Thompson, Jock Zonfrillo, Matt Stone, Ivan Brehm, Santiago Fernandez and Kobus van der Merwe (Restaurant of the Year winner at inaugural World Restaurant Awards).

Gourmet Escape runs November 8 to 17. Tickets go on sale Thursday July 18.
